Bishop Charles Agyin-Asare, Founder of Perez Chapel International has expressed his views on the just ended Electoral Commission of Ghana new Voters Registration Exercise for 2020 general elections. Saying he wasn’t impressed when the government deployed soldiers at some registration centers.
He says and action was needless in an interveiw he granted with Joy News.
“I was not too impressed when I saw some video clips during the registration when the soldiers were asking people…. for soldiers their presence alone keeps the fear of man in you so going into the elections you will want to see the soldiers and police being professional.” He said.
According to Bishop Asare, he’s convinced that the deployment of soldiers at registration centers created a degree of fear and havoc which caused misunderstanding in the process of registration at the
However, the government defended that the deployment of soldiers at some of the registration centers to prevent foreigners from entering at close borders to register their names in the Voters Registration. Mostly the borders in Volta Region which is as, by election records, one of the strongholds of opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Meanwhile, reports that came in from such areas claimed the military men were rather preventing people they think were not Ghanaians, but living in the Volta region and not those entering at the borders as the government defended.
This allegations has influenced Bishop Charles Agyin-Asare to expressed his opinion that he didn’t like the action that was taken by the government.
In his interview with Joy News, he cautioned the EC to organized a peaceful, free and fair, and transparent elections.
“Going into the elections, I would say that, we want peaceful elections. We want to make sure that the EC would be as neutral as they can be, we want our military and police to be professional and they shouldn’t harass people”.
